Freedom to Learn Summer TEACH-IN SERIES

JUNE - JULY 2023

Join the Movement!

*Rampant book bans in our public schools and threats to defund our public libraries;

*Laws passed in more than 25 states restricting teachers from teaching about racism and other so-called “divisive concepts” in U.S. history;

*Censoring by publishing companies and the AP College Board to erase the truth about inequality and discrimination from textbooks and children’s books

These extreme actions stemming from a radical conservative movement are unjust, anti-democratic, and dangerous.

These are the real “divisive concepts” and divisive actions undermining our nation today.

Enough is Enough!  We the people must respond!

Today, Americans must unite to reverse radical conservative anti-education laws by building broad coalitions across lines of race, gender, sexuality, and class.

The conservative movement is already restricting what students—and all Americans—can freely learn about each other and about U.S. history.

We the people must answer the urgent need to unite our communities through common knowledge of our history if we are ever to perfect the Union established nearly 250 years ago.  The truth matters.

One truth that we can build on is that “readers are leaders.”

Build a coalition of readers & leaders with Social Justice CALL

Social Justice CALL was founded to build coalitions between individuals and groups that are determined to improve our communities. Social Justice CALL does this work through organizing collective study. We do not strive to have everyone agree, but we strive to understand different experiences and perspectives. Everyone has some knowledge to share. We learn from one another, “each one teaching one” as our model. “Educating is our activism!”

We believe that:

  •  when we read together, we learn together.

  • when we read together and learn together, we can better lead together!

“WE THE PEOPLE” FREEDOM TO LEARN--SUMMER TEACH-IN SERIES

During summer 2023, Social Justice CALL (SJC), a community-based reading group, will organize a serious of teach-ins. Our aim is to find common ground with our neighbors by building common knowledge of our history as we envision strategies to embrace our common future.

Join us! Register to participate in “We the People” Freedom to Learn - Summer Teach-In Series, June-July, 2023.

Our first event, the UNBANNED BOOKS PUSHBACK on Wednesday May 3, 2023, 7-8:15 PM, will be a virtual launch of the “We the People'“ Freedom to Learn series with a new format that we are excited about: our first session and all following teach-in sessions will be co-facilitated by local community groups and individuals already working to serve our communities. When we read together and learn together, we can better lead together!
